Concerts for Charity benefit
Volunteers Betty Cochrane, Lisa Ruffino, Karl Steen, Al Benkert, Georgia Irish, Charles Sanford and Dick Cahoy of the Oceanside Business Association announce a new season of spectacular sights and sounds on the beach to benefit a different cause each month. The Beach Concert Series will feature jazz, blues, big band, fusion, swing, ethnic, and seasonal music of old. Each month, the OBA will make a donation to a single non-profit organization and provide them with a 10’ X 10’ space, at no charge, to promote their cause. If your non-profit group is interested in securing a month, please call the OBA hotline at (772) 231-0008 and leave your group name and contact information and someone will be in touch with you. October’s charitable group is the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of the Beaches, being held on Apr. 4-5, 2008 at Riverside Park.
Arts support Hospice
It was great to run into Cliff Partlow at the VNA Hospice House. Cliff is a brilliant photographer who has been documenting events and places in Vero Beach for many years. He is part of the Art for Hospice program presented by the Vero Beach Museum of Art and VNA Hospice House. He and other artists were selected by the museum for their diversity of media and their ties to the community. Suzanne Fox (writer), Elizabeth Colket (painter), Geoffrey Myers (sculptor), Betsy McKean (digital artist), Ann Weibel (painter), Shanti Sanchez (musician), Mary Segal (mixed media artist), Mark McCuaig (flutist) and Sarah Hale (pianist), were the other artists selected. The show opens Oct. 31 at the Museum. Read more about it in Luminaries.
Lifelong Learning’s lively program
Join local literatti Nancy Hopwood and Charlotte Terry for a lively discussion on the works of award-winning author Sena Jeter-Naslund as part of the Lifelong Learning Institute at IRCC fall session. Interested readers will meet today, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 from 10 -11:30 a.m. Then, on Nov. 16, at 11:30 a.m., you can meet the author and stay for lunch. The luncheon is open to the public and kicks off the 3rd Annual Vero Beach Book Festival, featuring the author’s latest book, Abundance, a novel of Marie Antoinette. Both the lifelong learning opportunity and the luncheon will be held at IRCC’s Richardson Center, Mueller Campus in Vero Beach. For more information and required reservations, call the IRCCs Lifelong Learning Institute at (772) 462-7880.
Youth Guidance seeks mentors
Jan Binney tells Bright Lights that Youth Guidance of Indian River County is seeking volunteers to serve as mentors. She says that even if you don’t have the time to mentor a child every week, you can volunteer to participate in other special one-time outings. Children and their mentors recently collected items from the community, packed them up with special heart-felt letters and sent them overseas to our troops. Visit www.ircyouth.com or call Barbara Schlitt Ford at (772) 770-5040.
Mixing it up
Millicent Carpenter tells us that the Gifford Youth Activities Center has partnered with Youth Guidance of Indian River County to host a Sunset Mixer from 5:30-7 p.m. on Nov.1, at Waldo’s (rain date, Nov. 8). They are bringing together current mentors and potential volunteers/mentors to learn how easy it is for businesses, groups and individuals to make a difference in the life of a child in need. RSVP is requested, but not required. For additional information call Millicent at (772)794-1005, ext. 32.
